Text: John 1:19-51, Heidelberg Catechism Lord’s Day 12
Theme: Jesus of Nazareth is the Christ, the anointed servant of the LORD.
‘Christ’ is the title of Jesus of Nazareth, the Son of God. The coming of the Christ (or the Messiah) was foreshadowed and prophesied in the Old Testament and came into fulfilment in Jesus Christ of Nazareth. This title however brings with it certain offices which Jesus Christ fulfills perfectly and which we in following Him are to fulfill as well.

Text: Ezekiel 34:15-16 & Matthew 18:10-20
Theme: Shepherding the Flock: (iii) How the Hurt and Wounded sheep are to be Bound up and Healed
The LORD says that He Himself will be the Shepherd to His flock. In doing so He has five main things that He will accomplish. The third of these is to bind up and heal the wounded and hurt sheep. The wounded sheep are those who are part of the LORD’s sheepfold, but have stumbled in sin. The LORD gives a very practical way of dealing with one another when we sin in Matthew 18. Whenever believers follow this course with one another, there is not only joy in heaven, but also growth in relationships.

Text: Psalm 130, Matthew 1:18-25, Heidelberg Catechism Lord’s Day 11
Theme: The Name ‘Jesus’, which means: The LORD redeems
In and of itself, the name ‘Jesus’ does not have any magical or extraordinary meaning. Yet in the Bible, God regularly uses names to convey important things. That is why God Himself calls on Joseph and Mary to name their son, who is in fact God’s only begotten Son, ‘Jesus’. The importance of what this name conveys is tied up in it’s meaning which is: The LORD redeems.

Text: Ezekiel 34:15-16 & Luke 15
Theme: Shepherding the Flock: (ii) How the Stray Sheep are to be Restored
The LORD says that He Himself will be the Shepherd to His flock. In doing so He has five main things that He will accomplish. The second of these is to bring back the strayed sheep. The strayed sheep are those who once was part of the LORD’s sheepfold, but have since turned their back on Him and have jumped the fence. Because we do not know whether this is a temporary apostatizing or a permanent apostasy, we are to diligently and earnestly seek these strayed sheep and minister to them the gospel until such time as they are once more part of the LORD’s sheepfold, or they show by their works that they have finally turned away.

Text: Ezekiel 34:15-16 & Luke 14:12-24
Theme: Shepherding the Flock: (i) How the Lost Sheep are to be Sought
The LORD says that He Himself will be the Shepherd to His flock. In doing so He has five main things that He will accomplish. The first of these is to seek the lost sheep and bring them into the sheepfold. The way that Scripture teaches us the LORD will accomplish this, is by sending His ministers to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ to all people and to the whole of creation. This is a task that needs to be done in all diligence and earnestness not ceasing until the lost sheep are part of the LORD’s sheepfold.

Text: Psalm 139, Hebrews 12:1-12, Heidelberg Catechism Lord’s Day 10
Theme: Live from the hand of the Father.
Scriptures teaches us that God, our Father, is a loving Father who takes care of His creations. He does this in such a way that not even a hair can fall from their head without Him having willed it to have happened. All creatures, indeed the whole of creation, are in His almighty hands. This is a very comforting thought when we realize that even though He chastises us and disciplines us at times, all things work together for our good.
